Newcomers often encounter complex, challenging situations as they adjust and integrate into society. Conversations with clients about these challenges can be particularly complicated given past trauma exposure and cultural differences. This webinar will offer best practices for navigating these sensitive conversations with a mutually respectful, trauma-informed approach. Participants will explore helpful communication strategies through case scenarios to develop skills for engaging clients supportively and effectively.


Objectives:

  • Recognize ongoing resettlement challenges, including employment and housing barriers, that require difficult conversations between clients and providers 

  • Identify key communication skills and specific phrases for keeping conversations supportive and respectful for both clients and providers 

  • Apply a trauma-informed and compassionate approach to current client and service provision challenges

This introductory course is designed for social workers and supervisors working in refugee service provision, including:  

  • Service providers and social workers who want to bolster their communication skills, particularly when discussing difficult topics with clients

  • Social work and resettlement supervisors and organizational staff who interact with newcomers or support client-facing staff

Instructors

Maya Wahrman, MSW, LSW

Maya Wahrman is a Switchboard Training Officer and social worker licensed in New Jersey with a lifelong commitment to working with refugees and immigrants. She brings to Switchboard a decade of experience in resettlement and immigrant services, including direct case management, mental health counseling, school and education support, program management, and state government policy and administration. Maya previously served as the Refugee Health and Wellness Specialist in the New Jersey Office of New Americans. Maya holds a Master of Social Work from Rutgers University and a Bachelor of Arts in History with certificates in Near Eastern Studies and Creative Writing from Princeton University.

​​​​​Jasmine Griffin, MA, LPC

​​Jasmine Griffin is a licensed professional counselor with over a decade of experience in mental health, program management, and trauma-informed care. She has served in roles spanning case management, supervision, and leadership in nonprofit and government settings. Most recently, Jasmine worked with the IRC’s Dallas site as Health and Wellness Sr. Program Manager, overseeing key programs such as intensive and supplemental case management, mental health, client voice, and food security. During her tenure at IRC Dallas, Jasmine also stepped into the role of Interim Deputy Director, guiding the team through significant leadership transitions while maintaining the delivery of high-quality services. Jasmine holds a BA in Sociology and Criminology from Cleveland State University and a Master of Professional Counseling from Grand Canyon University. ​​​​

Completion

ASWB CE Information

Social workers must attend the entire course and complete a course evaluation to be eligible for CE credit. There is no penalty for withdrawing from this free course, but leaners who do not finish the course will not receive a certificate of completion. To withdraw, contact [email protected]. Social workers will be required to get 100% on a post-test in order to receive CE credit, but they may retake the test as many times as necessary to get this score. Certificates of completion will be accessible in the course player within 10 business days of course completion.  

Navigating Difficult Conversations with Clients, course #XXXX, is approved by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program to be offered by Switchboard TA as an individual course.  

Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE course approval period: 2/17/2026 – 2/17/2028. Social workers completing this course receive 1.5 general continuing education credits.
